By Director

Halloween is right around the corner and if you celebrate this holiday your child has most likely been talking about what he or she will be. Perhaps they have even changed their mind a dozen times! Halloween is one of those holidays that can be very expensive if you decide to cave into the elaborate costumes but luckily this is not necessary!

3 Tips to save money this Halloween:

1.  Local Costume Exchange! Find a local costume exchange where or create your own! October 15, 2010 there is a local costume exchange in Boyne City, MI and best of all it is free, includes pumpkin painting and you don’t have bring a costume to take a costume. Here is how it works:

  • If you have older costumes bring them clean and ready for other children to use.
  • If you need costumes for your child choose from all of the costumes that are being exchanged and it is FREE.
  • Exchange and shop!
  • If you do not have a costume to exchange, that is okay too!
  • Local Boyne City Event, 5:30p -7:00p at the Boyne City Char-Em offices at 1313 Boyne Avenue, Boyne City, MI.

2.  Online Costume Exchange. There are many online sites that offer clothing and costume exchanges for parents with children of all ages! ThredUP, eBay Classifieds and even a National Costume Swap day! Watch this fun video for unique ideas and tips that help you go green and save money!

3.  Make Your Own Costume! Using old items from home a child can become a pirate, ghost, rock star, princess or whatever your imagination holds! Shopping at local resale shops can help accessorize your rock star, pirate or princess for a very low cost! Perhaps you have a Dora and Boots fan, visit Nick Jr. for some great tips on making your very own Dora and Boots costume and accessories!

About

Funded with a grant from the Early Childhood Investment Corporation of the State of Michigan and the Kellogg Foundation, our project began in April of 2006. The goal of the project is to form multiple collaborative bodies in the state to begin development of a comprehensive system of early childhood care and education for 0-5 year olds and their families. This system is similar to the Smart Start system of North Carolina and the state of Michigan is receiving technical assistance in our efforts from the state of North Carolina.
