Parents as Advocates

By Director

As a parent, I feel it is my responsibility to advocate for my children. My toddler cannot tell a legislator about how they need preschool, the child down the street needs basic needs because mom or dad lost their job and how we need more direct services or parent support and education programs, for example. It is not easy to know how to educate someone that is a decision or policy maker and it is sometimes scary and frustrating to write letters tell friends and head to the State Capitol and have a voice for Michigan’s youngest children.

I understand.

Which is why the Parent Coalition is here to support you and give you the tools and guidance you need so that your voice is heard, however loud you would like to be or soft. We’ve created a new advocacy tool box to help you and it is free to download and print. We’ve also arranged for a special bus leaving May 19, 2010 and heading to Star Power 2010 in Lansing, Michigan. The bus will be making stops in Gaylord (6am), Kalkaska (7am) and Cadillac (8am) and will return this same day. The cost is free of charge and children are welcome. A day together as parents having a voice for our youngest citizens in Michigan and I hope you can join us. Feel free to register here and call me to RSVP for a seat on the bus and which location you’ll be joining us at and how many (231.582.8070).

About

Funded with a grant from the Early Childhood Investment Corporation of the State of Michigan and the Kellogg Foundation, our project began in April of 2006. The goal of the project is to form multiple collaborative bodies in the state to begin development of a comprehensive system of early childhood care and education for 0-5 year olds and their families. This system is similar to the Smart Start system of North Carolina and the state of Michigan is receiving technical assistance in our efforts from the state of North Carolina.
