The Parent Connection will be offered in two locations beginning January 12 in Petoskey, and January 13 in Cheboygan. The series of seven classes present Nurturing Parenting by Stephen Bavolek, Ph.D., and is for parents of children birth to age twelve. The practices presented in Nurturing Parenting focus on skills and strategies for parents. By understanding appropriate developmental expectations of their children, parents can discipline and communicate in positive ways, and build a strong parent-child relationship. Participants receive a handbook, additional class materials and a certificate upon completion. Classes are held weekly 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Registration is required, and the cost is $50 for one or both parents/caregivers. Scholarships are available.

MSU Extension Educator Carolyn Penniman offers the classes at the Petoskey Northern Michigan Regional Hospital Community Health Education Center, and at the Cheboygan Public Library. Child care is not provided. The registration deadline is January 6, 2010. To register for either location or for more information, please contact Carolyn Penniman: 231-439-8973, or pennimac@msu.edu.

About

Funded with a grant from the Early Childhood Investment Corporation of the State of Michigan and the Kellogg Foundation, our project began in April of 2006. The goal of the project is to form multiple collaborative bodies in the state to begin development of a comprehensive system of early childhood care and education for 0-5 year olds and their families. This system is similar to the Smart Start system of North Carolina and the state of Michigan is receiving technical assistance in our efforts from the state of North Carolina.
