Helpful Hints and What to Look For When Locating Child Care

1. Emergency procedures and a current license should be posted.
2. A baby needs to be changed, fed, and sleep according to his/her body’s time clock, not an imposed scheduled.
3. Notice if the children and provider are washing their hands after changing diapers, before eating, etc.
4. Notice if the children’s area has child size furniture and a variety of toys for creative play.
5. Babies should never be allowed to sleep in car seats, bouncy seats, swings, or an adult size beds. They should only be placed on their backs in an approved crib or playpen.
6. Children should be engaged in imaginative play, which allows them to interact and learn. TV time should be limited to 1-2 hours/day.
7. Is there positive interaction?
8. Do the children get a lot of attention?
9. Are the children happy and comfortable?
10. Is the home/site clean, safe, and healthy?
11. Remember to drop in unannounced from time to time.

Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Child Care Provider

1. Are the children taken off the premises? How are they transported?
2. What are your emergency procedures? Are they posted? Do you have practice drills? How will I be notified in case of an emergency?
3. What is your medication policy?
4. What precautions are taken to reduce the spread of illness?
5. How often are the children taken outdoors?
6. How are the children supervised?
7. Where do the children sleep, play, and eat?
8. Describe a typical day. What activities are the children involved in?
9. Can children bring a special toy from home?
10. How often do you read with the children?
11. Tell me how you plan activities to promote development.
12. What is your guidance and discipline policy?
13. What are the rules? How do they learn them?
14. How do you settle disputes?
15. Ask, “what if” questions. (What if my child hits you? What if my child bites another child? What if my child won’t take a nap?)
16. How many hours of training are you required to have? How many hours did you obtain in the past year? Are you currently CPR certified?
17. What have you learned in recent workshops? How will you keep me updated on your training?
18. Can I drop in anytime unannounced?
